Condition in which a blood clot forms in a
vein or artery, causing loss of circulation
to the area served by the vessel. If it
breaks away, it often travels to the lungs,
causing pulmonary embolism. Thrombosis in
veins of the legs is often seen in
association with phlebitis, and in arteries
with atheroma. Thrombosis increases the risk
of heart attack (myocardial infarct) and
stroke. It is treated by surgery and/or
anticoagulant drugs.
